Have the Magic lost the Magic?

Thursday, May 20, 2010

This was supposed to be a happy time in central Florida.

Orlando was going to be the center of the universe, at least in the world that is the National Basketball Association.

The Magic, who dispatched Charlotte and Atlanta in eight games in the first two rounds of the playoffs, were going to waltz through the Eastern Conference Finals, leaving only Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers standing between Orlando and its first NBA title.

Invitations to the victory parade in downtown Orlando already had been addressed and were waiting to be mailed out. Venerable Amway Arena, home of the Magic since the franchise's inception in 1989, has been spruced up in anticipation of national television audiences who would witness Orlando's coronation via the digital airwaves.

Nothing could scuttle the dream. The Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy was Orlando's for the taking.

They just had to play out the string and the region would have its first major sports title, not counting minor-league baseball championships and those win in gimmick sports, like Arena Football.

Somebody, apparently, forgot to tell the Boston Celtics that everything was set, the champagne was on ice and they couldn't rain on the party.

But they did. The Celtics unleashed an old fashioned "frog strangler" on the Magic, sending the teams to Boston with Orlando drowning in an 0-2 series (sink)hole.

A sweep that seemed so unlikely is now a very real possibility.

Fans who had already set aside a few bucks to buy T-shirts inscribed with "Orlando Magic, 2009-10 NBA Champions" have likely begun to spend that money on other things, like amusement park tickets or hotel rooms at the beach.

Even "The Amway," now looks like it was prepared for a final viewing and burial -- since the Magic will move down the street into the new Amway Center next season -- instead of being home to the NBA Champions.

Where did these Celtics come from?

They weren't supposed to be this good.

They were ancient in basketball years.

They couldn't handle the Magic in the regular season (losing three of four games), so why should the playoffs be any different.

All true, perhaps, but they still have those little green leprechauns hanging out, helping them out when things get tough.

That must've been why J. J. Redick couldn't call timeout with seven seconds to play. The leprechauns were holding his hands down.

Perhaps that also explains why the Magic have been so lethargic for the first three quarters in the series' first two games, both losses for Orlando. The little green-garbed men were on the backs of the Magic players, forcing Dwight Howard, Vince Carter and the rest to drag them up and down the court.

Certainly the leprechauns sat on the backboard in the final minute of Tuesday's game and swatted away both of Carter's crucial free throws.

All good excuses and I'd love nothing more than to use any of them to explain away the Magic's predicament, but I can't.

None of us can.

Of course, only one reason can explain what's happened to the Magic.

Boston is a better team.

The Celtics' veteran-laden roster has plenty of playoff experience and players know the NBA's 82 game regular season is a grind and pacing is a key element to maintaining their energy level in the postseason. All the Celtics battled injuries this season and they're finally healthy at the right time of year.

When both teams walked off the floor Tuesday, the Magic looked like a worn-out team. They didn't look like a club that had nearly of week of rest between games.

Boston was fresher and played with more energy, despite having closed out Cleveland in the conference semifinals just three days before the series opener against Orlando.

Orlando's still searching for an answer to Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. Redick, Mickael Pietrus and Matt Barnes took turns Tuesday trying to slow down Pierce. All three failed in matchups that resembled a high-school player trying to stop Michael Jordan.

Redick did manage to score 16 points and was a factor down the stretch in the Magic's come back from an 11-point deficit. However, an inability to slow down Pierce negated any virtually all of the trio's offensive contributions.

Rondo's performance was even more impressive. The 6-foot-1 point guard from Kentucky dissected the Magic. His whirling dervish drives and smooth jump shots left his Orlando counterparts, Jameer Nelson and Jason WIlliams, reaching for air.

Can the Magic bounce back and win the series? Well, it has happened before.

Three teams in NBA history have come back from 2-0 deficits after losing the first two of a series on their home floor. The first time was in 1969 when the Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West-led Lakers dropped the first two games against the San Francisco Warriors, but won the next four.

The last time occurred in 2005 when Houston beat Dallas in Games One and Two, before the Mavericks rebounded and took the series in seven games.

It's not going to happen in 2010, though. Orlando looked and sounded thoroughly beaten after Tuesday's game.

That's a bitter dose of truth serum for this Magic fan.

I want Orlando to beat Boston. That victory parade down Orange Avenue would be a sight to behold. Seeing Howard and Carter hold up the O'Brien trophy would be an emotional moment for fans -- many of whom began supporting the team in 1986, when current Senior Vice President Pat Williams began working the community for support and lobbying the league for a franchise.

That's all gone now. Boston's going to wrap up the series, possibly in four games.

And then I'll move on. The NBA Draft is about a month away and league training camps open in less than four months.

There'll be plenty of reasons to be happy again.

NBA PLAYOFFS Superman shouldn't be a bully

Random observations on the NBA brayoffs, playoffs, whatever ...

-- Dwight Howard, please remove your Superman tattoo. Superman was no bully. When the Magic center MMA'd the Celtics' Paul Pierce on Tuesday night, one TV commentator crowed, "Playoff basketball!" Wrong. That's prison basketball.

-- Howard, off the court, can be a delightful guy. But so much of his game is based on blunt-force trauma that it's hard to send him a lot of love. Finesse-wise, Howard makes Shaq O'Neal look like Curly Neal.

-- No sports officials protect the game's superstars like NBA refs do. Even so, Howard is the one superstar constantly in danger of being taken out of a game with foul trouble.

-- Ref Joe DeRosa, for his next trick, will hurl a bucket of water on courtside fans, only the "water" will be confetti. Hilarious!

-- Hi, I'm Amar'e Stoudemire. Monday against the Lakers, I played 35 minutes and amassed three rebounds! Then I said Lamar Odom (19 rebounds, 19 points) was "lucky." Hey, when I read my own quotes in print, I laughed at myself.

-- Then I changed my first name to A-mere'three.

-- Stoudemire is hard and tough; Pau Gasol is squishy and wimpy. Which guy would you rather have on your team? Stoudemire, over the last three quarters of Game 1 and the first two quarters of Game 2 combined, grabbed one rebound more than Wilt Chamberlain.

-- Coach Alvin Gentry to the Suns at halftime Wednesday: "If we're going to go down, let's go down fighting!" So the Suns charge out of the locker room saying, "Dammit, let's get our butts kicked with dignity!"?

-- What a weird trio hugging toward the end of Wednesday's game: Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest, Gasol.

-- Odom, Mr. Lucky again Wednesday. Eleven rebounds, 17 points. Good time to play the lottery, bro.

-- Stoudemire also said of Odom, "I'm not giving him no hype." Thus Stoudemire barely missed recording his first playoffs triple-negative.

-- "Pride comes before a fall," quoth Howard, after hearing that Pierce twittered, "Anybody got a broom?" Tweet! Foul on Howard for misquoting the Bible. It's, "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall," in the Bible's King James version.

-- No, LeBron did not write that version of the Bible.

-- In the NBA, pride often goeth before a series sweepeth.

-- The Celtics claim that wasn't really Pierce's tweet. They say someone hacked into Pierce's Twitter account. Really? Someone went to the trouble to hack into Pierce's account to tweet, "Anybody got a broom?"?

-- Twitter-hacking looms as a crime that could erode the integrity of the NBA. David Stern has no choice but to mobilize an NBA Tweet Police.

-- Saw Jerry West interviewed on TV. The Warriors could have had West as general manager in 2002, when he went to Memphis, but the Warriors' organization showed zero interest. West is a free agent again. He likes the West Coast. He is a genius-level judge of basketball talent. Chris Cohan doesn't know who West is, but a new team owner might.

-- Rajon Rondo, during Tuesday's Boston win, changed his shoes twice. Three pair of shoes in one game - does that count as a triple double?

-- Is it ray-zhon or rah-zhon? Or rah-john? Because Rondo has become a cosmic weapon, let's just call him Ray-Gun.

-- The fan Joe DeRosa flipped the ball at is Franz Hanning, the CEO of Wyndham Vacation Ownership. Acting like a guy who might have just enjoyed a three-mai-tai half.

-- I can't tell from watching on TV if Howard is still spitting on the ball. When the Magic played in Oakland this season, whenever a Warriors player was shooting two free throws, after the first, Howard would ask the ref for the ball, hold it in both hands and spit on it. Seriously. Pa-tooey! I asked him about it after the game, he looked sheepish, said, "I was just blowing on it." Weird.

-- These playoffs are merely the NBA's opening act. The big show is the LeBron James Sweepstakes. Many insiders seem convinced James will take his royal self to the New York Knicks. Why? Because it's New York. Great choice by LeBron, because New York fans support and love their hoops stars unconditionally ... as long as their names are Bradley, Reed, Frazier and Monroe. If not, just make sure you're perfect every game. Every quarter. Otherwise, as the tabloid headlines should scream when James signs, "START SPREADING THE BOOS."

Howard won't be suspended

The NBA will not suspend Orlando's Dwight Howard for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Magic and Boston Celtics for his flagrant foul in Game 2.

Dwight Howard & Paul Pierce
John Raoux-Pool/ Howard's takedown of Paul Pierce in Game 2 resulted in a flagrant foul, but not a suspension.

In the second quarter of Game 2, the All-Star center was called for a flagrant foul 1 after swinging his arm so that his elbow swept through the head of the Celtics' Paul Pierce, who tumbled to the floor clutching his head in pain. Both players remained in the game.

The NBA reviews all flagrant foul calls, and officials spent part of Wednesday deciding whether to upgrade Howard's foul to a more serious flagrant 2 or suspend him for Game 3. A league spokesperson said the play will "stand as called."

The NBA has a track record of punishing blows to the head severely. Howard himself was suspended for a first-round playoff game last season against the Philadelphia 76ers after swinging an elbow at the head of Samuel Dalembert.

Prokhorov Shines In NBA Debut

Following in the footsteps of Roman Abramovich (Chelsea Football Club), kazillionaire Mikhail Prokhorov has joined the ranks of Russian oligarchs who now own Western sports teams.

The "Forbes"-lister, metals magnate, and Jet Ski stud's acquisition of the National Basketball Association's New Jersey Nets has not been without controversy.

But that doesn't appear to have dampened the enthusiasm of the NBA-sized (6' 8" or 2 meters) Prokhorov, who's that league's first non-North American owner. (And one of the few who can boast Jay-Z as a co-owner.)

Prokhorov opened his debut press conference with humor and poise -- and he appears to have earned a nickname, since the Nets' own site dubbed it a "Proky presser."

Prokhorov displayed a formidable knowledge of the game -- or at least of American basketball's personalities, tossing out references to Michael Jordan's spot in the 1984 draft and the nickname of one of college basketball's most storied coaches, Duke's "Coach K."

After feigning no knowledge of two-time MVP and soon-to-be-free agent Lebron James, Prokhorov vowed that "with a little bit of money and a little bit of luck, we'll go straight to the top." In between hints at his deep pockets and willingness to spend on the franchise, Prokhorov added that "if everything goes as planned, I expect us to be in the playoffs next year, and championship in one year, minimum, and maximum five years."

As any Nets fan can attest, leading his new franchise to the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy is no slam-dunk. That reality was underscored in the Nets' disappointing third-place finish in the draft lottery (open to the seven worst teams in the league). But Prokhorov has said all the right things and garnered heaps of praise. "The New York Times" gushed:

In a broad, brightly lit Manhattan ballroom, the new owner of the N.B.A.’s worst team made an entrance befitting a Hollywood star. Lights flashed, shutters snapped in rapid-fire fashion and cameras rolled.

And later, according to "The New York Times":

A renowned playboy, Prokhorov joked he could name the team after a girlfriend — “And every time I change, I need to change the name of the team,” he said, drawing another round of laughter.

Here's his interview for the NBA's official website. Check Here

Lebron belongs in Cleveland

The Friday morning following yet another epic collapse by a Cleveland sports team, this time, by the NBA’s best regular season team for the second year in a row, I received a text message just past the crack of dawn from The News-Herald’s Sports Editor Mark Podolski asking me if I was going to be blogging about the Cavaliers season coming to an end.

Two reasons I didn’t feel like blogging.

One, because when I received that text around 7 a.m., I was actually standing on top of the News-Herald building weighing the pros and cons of jumping off of it and two, if I did put into words of how I felt following another heartbreaking loss that crushed the dreams of thousands of Clevelanders and published them onto this Web site, I wouldn’t have a job anymore.

A week later, I have calmed down and for the time being, stepped back from the ledge. It also doesn’t hurt to see the Boston Celtics once again manhandling their opponent which is healing some wounds rather quickly taking the focus off Cleveland collapsing and turning it to, maybe Boston was just that good.

Let’s face it. Everyone on the planet underestimated the Boston Celtics, myself included. Not only did I wish to face the Celtics, I wanted to pound them.

Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

It wasn’t a fluke either as they have since went onto the Eastern Conference Finals and are pounding the Orlando Magic, who up until a few days ago, were the favorites to win it all. How Boston is doing this, I have no idea. The team that went 27-27 in their final 54 games magically turned on some sort of switch and have been playing like men possessed for the past two weeks. I still keep expecting them to run out of gas and it’s just not happening.

But what is going on in Cleveland right now has nothing to do with what goes on on the court.

Everyone’s focus is on whether LeBron stays or leaves. A few weeks ago, it seemed like a lock he’d stay. Now, since “LeCollapse,” everyone is jumping off that bandwagon.

I’m not.

For the past seven years, even before the Cavs were winning, I thought LeBron would always stay here.

He always talks about building a legacy, playing for a winning team and being a loyal person. His friends from high school are his agents, business managers and help him with the most crucial decisions that he makes on and off the court.

It wouldn’t make sense for the kid from Akron who is literally treated like a God here to ever leave.

If he goes to New York, they’ll love him for a little while, until the teams goes on a three-game skid, or LeBron has a personal slump, and then the New York media first rips into his basketball game, then the New York tabloids find ways to tear his personal life down.

If he ever turned in a performance like he did in Game 5 in New York City, there would be people marching down the streets calling for his head. He’d be crucified.

He also said he’d never play for a coach who didn’t stress defense. Mike D’Antoni doesn’t know the meaning of defense. Not to mention, the talent level on New York is a joke. I don’t care if they have enough money to sign LeBron and another max free agent, which brings me to my next point.

All these guys, LeBron, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, say they’d all love to play together. It sounds nice, but deep down, these guys don’t want anything to do with each other on the court. They want the ball in their hands, they want to dominate possessions, they want the spotlight on themselves. When their team wins, they want to make sure people know why the team won. Their egos are too big to play with each other, to share the glory or the spotlight, which is why LeBron going to play in Miami with Wade doesn’t make any sense either, or LeBron teaming up with Bosh in New York.

Reports of him going to Chicago? Spare me.

As I already pointed out, LeBron wants his own legacy, not to live in the shadow of Michael Jordan who won six rings in Chicago.

LeBron can go to Chicago and win five rings and it still wouldn’t be good enough for Chicago fans. Nothing would be good enough in Chicago unless he won seven, and let’s be realistic, there are too many superstars in the NBA that balance out rosters so every year, or every few years, there will be new elite teams. This isn’t the early 90s anymore.

If you thought people compared LeBron to Jordan now, imagine LeBron playing in the house that Jordan built? Trust me, it wouldn’t be good enough.

LeBron wants his own legacy. Not to be a shadow of his idol.

Back to the ego point as well, Chicago has a fine young point guard who is an exceptional talent however, he puts up 18 shots a game. That is a lot for a point guard and only two less shots per game then LeBron puts up. I'm not sure those two would be a good combination or if they'd be able to share the spotlight.

The other teams that can sign him are New Jersey, Minnesota, Sacramento, Washington. Cross them all of the list. In fact, don’t even put them on the list.

New Jersey not getting the first or second pick in this year’s draft put a huge dent into their plans of reeling in LeBron. Also, the team not moving to Brooklyn for at least two to three more years doesn’t help either. I just don’t even see this being a possibility at this point.

I’m sure LeBron doesn’t even think about Sacramento, Washington or Minnesota being reasonable options. No, not even the Timberwolves own, Sasha Pavlovic, can convince LeBron playing there. The Wizards franchise is dysfunctional and Sacramento? Please, Chris Webber said he cried when he found out he was traded there.

Everyone also seems to forget, the Cavs can offer LeBron the most money. More often than not in sports, money talks (although, wherever LeBron signs, it's very likely he'll sign a shorter contract.)

The bottom line is, LeBron has been here all his life. Why leave now? The only team he knows, the only city he knows and the only fan base he knows who worship him. Why start over?

He has an owner - in my honest opinion, the best owner in sports - who is willing to bend over backwards to win and is doing everything short of naming LeBron the general manager. No matter what anyone says, LeBron has some serious pull with the decision process this team makes. Will he get that anywhere else?

To Cavs fans, the next six weeks are going to be brutal. You’ll hear every rumor in the book. Every move made by LeBron will be magnified and over-analyzed. One day he’ll be a lock to go to New York, the next week he’ll be condo-shopping in Chicago. Maybe we’ll hear about a European team offering LeBron $50 million to play overseas.

Don’t pay attention to any of it.

Sometime in early July, I truly expect LeBron to make the right decision.

Home is where the heart is.

NBA playoffs: historical dud

After the first round of the NBA playoffs, I wrote about what a dud they were. Now we’re 11/2 rounds past that, and nothing has changed. These playoffs are historically bad.

We had three four-game sweeps in the conference semifinals, and now both conference finals are driving down 4-0 Boulevard. The four-and-counting playoff sweeps are historic.

The NBA had just three sweeps combined the previous two seasons. Since the advent of the seven-game first round, the most four-game sweeps in the playoffs has been four, in 2007. These playoffs have a chance to house the most sweeps since 1999, when six series went the minimum, including two 3-0 decisions in the first round.

The sweeps in the conference semifinals are most alarming. One-sided basketball can happen in the first round. But in the conference semifinals? Against teams that already have dispatched a foe? Yet the Lakers swept Utah, Phoenix swept San Antonio and Orlando swept Atlanta. Now Boston has won twice in Orlando, setting up a possible (likely?) Celtic sweep. And the Suns, down 2-0, don’t figure to grow in stature or figure out how to play defense just because they’re in Phoenix.

This stands to be the most sweep-heavy NBA post-season of the last 20 years. Not since 1989 have we had such a dud post-season.

1989 is not remembered as a particular bad NBA season. It sits in the middle of two delightful eras, the bridge between the Bird/Magic revival and the Jordan dominance.

1989 was the year an epic team emerged. The Piston Bad Boys won the first of their two straight championships, and they did so with a four-game Finals sweep of the Lakers. Which was the NINTH sweep of the post-season.

That’s right. Nine sweeps. Five of them were in the first round, which sounds top heavy. But that leaves three sweeps among the seven remaining series, which still is a ridiculously high number.

The Lakers swept the Suns in the ‘89 Western Conference Finals. Which means among the league’s three marquee series, only one wasn’t a sweep. And that one went 4-2, Detroit over the blossoming Bulls.

Of the NBA’s 15 series in 1989, only two went the distance, both five-game series in the first round. We’ve had 12 series completed so far in 2010; only Atlanta-Milwaukee went seven games.

Thunder-Lakers clearly was the most compelling series of the first round. Only one other series, Boston-Cleveland, has approached it as we near the end of the conference semifinals.

Suicide lines: Suns defense falters; Celtics want to sweep

Each weekday morning, BDL serves up a handful of NBA-related stories to digest with your milk bag.

Jeff Miller, Orange County Register: "Good luck trying to reach the NBA Finals, Phoenix. The Suns are going to need luck to happen and a whole lot more, like the type of events detailed in the Bible. Lakers 124, Suns 112 unfolded at Staples Center with the home team displaying the myriad ways it can dispose of the other guys. Just ask Amar'e Stoudemire(notes), the self-appointed authority on luck these days. Actually, Stoudemire's specialty might be yuck, because that word describes his - and all of the Suns' - defensive performance so far. 'We have to figure it out,' a beaten Grant Hill(notes) said. 'We've scored enough points. But defensively, they're scoring at will.' Said teammate Steve Nash(notes): 'I thought our offense was pretty decent. But when they score 120-something, it's asking the offense to score way too much.'"

Mark Murphy, Boston Herald: "There is a strong urge to play Game 3 immediately. The Celtics, with a 2-0 series lead over Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals, can smell blood like never before. But for the second straight round, the Celtics have to wait a postseason eternity - three full off days - before beginning the home leg of the series. 'I would rather play,' said Ray Allen(notes). 'When you have two or three off days, you start to think of things like, oh, the closet needs cleaning.' Back on May 7 in the Garden, a little too much of that closet dust got in the way. LeBron James(notes) opened with a 21-point first quarter and the Cavaliers ran off with a 124-95 win that was the worst playoff loss in Celtics history. That night also turned out to be an anomaly. The Celtics were the dominant team in their second-round win, closing out the series in six games and winning twice in Cleveland. And now they have won twice in Orlando. It's the first time the Magic lost back-to-back home games this season, and the Celtic mission is clear: No one wants to return for a Game 5, save for the wounded Magic. 'We still have to put our hard hats on even though we're going home, because home isn't necessarily a place where we've played well all year long,' said Paul Pierce(notes). 'We have to keep the same intensity.'"

Julian Benbow, Boston Globe: "A two-games-to-none lead in a best-of-seven series is that awkward margin that gives teams just enough reason to be confident but not enough reason to let their foot off the pedal. But going on the road and putting a team in a two-game hole might be just enough reason to get cocky. In the history of the NBA, 14 teams have dug themselves out of a two-games-to-none hole to win a series. But only three teams have ever done so after dropping the first two games of a seven-game series on their home floor: the Dallas Mavericks in 2005, the Houston Rockets in 1994, and the Los Angeles Lakers in 1969. After snatching two games at Amway Arena and effectively icing a Magic team that had been the hottest in the playoffs, the Celtics like the position they're in, with Game 3 coming up Saturday night at TD Garden. 'I feel pretty good about it,' said Kendrick Perkins(notes). 'I think this Game 3 is the most important, though. We can't give them any hope.'"

Terry Foster, Detroit News: "Ben Wallace stood on a brand new asphalt basketball court wearing a red T-shirt with the words 'Motor City Makeover' splashed across it. He was one of dozens of volunteers, including present and former NBA players, helping spruce up the Butzel Family Center on the city's near east side. He was happy to help because this is the city where he earned his name. This is where he became one of the toughest defenders in the NBA. This also might be where his career ends. Wallace admitted Wednesday he's unsure if he'll retire, or if he does return to the NBA, stay with the Pistons. 'Everybody has supported me, and for the rest of my life I am going to be remembered for what I did here,' he said. 'I feel a part of the community of Detroit. This is always going to have a special place in my heart.' The factor in his decision: his 35-year-old body. Wallace, who is working out almost daily at home in Virginia, said he must listen to his body. 'When I am healthy, I can play this game at a high level night in and night out,' he said. 'But sometimes, those knick-knack injuries take so much out of you mentally. Physically, I can handle anything but mentally when you have those injuries, it takes away from your game.' Pistons general manager Joe Dumars said via text message the team isn't putting any pressure on Wallace. 'We would like to have him back,' Dumars wrote. 'And he'll let me know when he's ready to make a decision.'"

Phil Miller, Minneapolis Star-Tribune: "David Kahn hates the NBA draft lottery, and that was before the Timberwolves became its victim again. 'It is truly a hideous experience. It is just awful,' the Wolves' president said of Tuesday's gathering of non-playoff teams, all praying that random luck could manage what their forlorn rosters could not. 'You could almost sense the desperation in the room.' Yet despite ending up with the fourth pick after turning in the second-worst record in the league, the Wolves' roster overhaul is not necessarily in desperate shape. As Kahn said after the lottery, 'we have enough of an arsenal' to acquire the foundation of a winner -- draft picks, cap space and tradable assets. Fourth pick is hardly an afterthought, too. Hall of Famer Dave Cowens was drafted fourth, as was Olympic gold medalist Chris Paul(notes) and this season's rookie of the year, Tyreke Evans(notes). 'People say this is a two-player draft, but that's just at the very top,' said ESPN.com draft analyst Chad Ford. 'Actually, there are eight to 10 very good players before you see a drop-off. The Wolves should have no trouble getting a player who can step right in and help them.'" Check here for More
